Literary Highlight: May Swenson

Sat Apr 4th; 3PM - 5PM

This April, we celebrate Utah-born May Swenson, one of America's most quietly radical literary voices, and one of the most anthologized poets from the 20th century. Born in 1913 to Swedish immigrant parents, Swenson was able to recite lengthy poems from memory by the age of 3, laying the foundations for what would be an incredible poetical career.

May Swenson's unique emphasis on themes of sexuality, nature, and encapsulating imagery are completely representative of her journey from Utah during The Great Depression, a journey to "seek herself and beauty", that eventually places her in New York.

Through wine, words, and wide-open questions, we’ll explore Mays complicated legacy and enduring impact. Expect sharp insights, spirited debate, and a space to reflect on how, as a feminist, a lesbian, and a fiercely independent thinker, she refused to let poetry be confined by gender, religion, or expectation.

For Swenson, poetry wasn't duty. It wasn't doctrine. It wasn't performance.

It was pleasure.

May Swenson claims that "I have spent my life having fun. Poetry is pleasure", so lets take a page out of Swenson's book and have fun discussing the depth of her writings. Whether you have carried Swenson's works in your heart for years or you plan to carry it off the shelf a few days from now, come engage in drinks, cheese, discussion, and delve into the writings, themes, and impact of May Swenson.
