Reading and Book Signing with Artist Louise Levergneux

    Ken Sanders Rare Books is pleased to announce a reading and book signing with book artist Louise Levergneux, author of the new book Faux-Pas, on Friday, July 1st at 7:00 p.m. at our downtown bookstore (268 South 200 East). Copies of Faux-Pas and many of Levergneux’s other titles will be available for purchase and signing that evening. This event is free and open to the public. Faux-Pas will be issued in a limited edition of only 18 copies so they will not be available for long.
   Faux-Pas is a photographic documentation prompted by Levergneux’s curiosity while living in the USA. This study investigates the use of the American flag as an act of patriotism. As a Canadian living an extended ‘séjour’ in Ohio and in Utah, Levergneux found the pattern and colours of the American flag to be visually intoxicating.
  I carried out research on the United States Code relating to the use of the flag. I came to realize that our friends south of the border have put considerable thought into the flag’s reverent treatment. The laws relating to the flag outline rules, customs and etiquette pertaining to respectful use of the Stars and Stripes. The obvious expressions of patriotism featured in this book struck me as clear violations of the United States Code pertaining to the flag. My observations of the symbol that touches the core identity of Americans are portrayed in my project.
    Louise Levergneux’s artistic practice is the production of artists' books. Levergneux’s work incorporates digital photography as a device that express her interest in the concepts of memory and identity. Individual references are characteristic of the work, which centers on the act of collecting, storing and disseminating personal information. Levergneux’s work continues to store and collect for the viewer her memories, her self-identity, and her environment. References to memory, history, and personal recollection are characteristic of her work.
    Levergneux is the creator of numerous art book including Seattle Visité, a postcard book whose images, texts, words, and activities demonstrate the nonsensical nature of collection, observance, and tourism; 26NOV2006, a response to an interrogation that took place on the artist while crossing the border from Canada into the United States; and Ambivalence, a photographic documentation of Ohio pet cemeteries. She has exhibited widely in the United States, the UK, and Canada and her work is in private and institutional collections around the world.
