Ken Sanders Rare Books Presents An Evening with Bone Collectors and Shane Jackman Ken Sanders Rare Books is pleased to announce a reading and concert featuring Bone Collectors, a collaboration between songwriter Tom Begich and poet Timothy Mason, as well as songwriter and guitarist Shane Jackman on Tuesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m. at our downtown bookstore (268 South 200 East). Mason’s books as well as CDs from all the performers will be available for purchase and signing at the event. This event is free and open to the public. Bone Collectors is a collaboration between songwriter Tom Begich and Massachusetts poet Timothy Mason. Their performances fuse song and poem into a seamless new form that resonates deeply across a landscape both timeless and contemporary. Dubbed “Bone Collectors” by an audience member in northern Vermont who found their performance and substance evocative of deeper truths, the duo’s authenticity is compelling. The bohemian son of a family steeped in Alaska politics and the product of a life of music and art, Tom Begich ’s music and poetry resonate with the stories and the conflicts of the human condition. Part of the Alaska music scene in the early 1980s, Tom dropped out and tuned in to the world of politics and business for a decade before finding his way back to local coffee shops, street corners, and music festivals. Tom also hosted a monthly Songwriter’s Showcase in his hometown of Anchorage for three years and has appeared on XM Radio and performed live on numerous radio stations and on the nationally syndicated radio shows “West Coast Live" and "River City Folk". Tom has released four CDs, "Such a World" in 1997, "Hotel Metropol" in 1999, “Albuquerque Road” in 2001, and “Cool Blue Light” in 2004/2005. His first book of poetry, Six Truths: 50 Sonnets is forthcoming. Timothy Mason has been actively performing poetry and promoting folk music since the 1980s. He honed his performance style in the early poetry slams and around the campfires of the fabled Kerrville Folk Festival. An extensive background in human services, three years volunteering for a telephone crisis intervention hotline, training as a rape crisis counselor, four years working with developmentally disabled adults, a stint with court-involved youth, and eight years volunteering in a battered women’s shelter have given him a unique empathy with the quiet battles of daily survival. His poetry is drawn from his diverse experiences and is written to be performed aloud. His most recent work, Feral Voices, is a full length, 94 page collection of poetry giving a non-human voice and sensibility to the 21st century experience on our shared planet. His first book was Gently, Like Water, Cracking Stone and in 1998 he released the CD “Bloodlines” which features music by award winning musician Geoff Bartley. A follow up collaboration “Bones and Breath” came in 2003 where they continued to combine song and poem into seamless new creations. He is currently the Director of the New England Folk Music Archives. With half a million miles and over a thousand concerts in the rearview mirror, Shane Jackman is the consummate performer. Surpassing 150 concerts a year, he has shared the stage with some of the world’s most celebrated artists. Each of his 5 albums have garnered praise and critical acclaim, even spending time on the Americana Top 40 charts. After years of playing the festival stages, colleges and grass-roots music halls of America, Shane was particularly honored to be named “Artist of the Year” by his hometown of Springville, Utah. When he’s not busy with music, he works with a non-profit foundation for troubled youth.
