The Juarez Medicine Show: A Night of Remembrance for Charles Bowden [1945-2014]

Friday, Nov 21, 2014

Location:
Ken Sanders Rare Books (268 S 200 E, SLC, UT)

Ken Sanders Rare Books would like to invite the public to a night of remembrance for the late great writer Charles Bowden starting at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 21st at our downtown bookstore (268 South 200 East, SLC, UT). This event is free and open to the public.

Ken Sanders says:

“Our friend, the writer Charles Bowden died on August 31st of this year. He was 69 years old and the most fearless writer in America. He published some 21 books between his first, Killing the Hidden Waters (1977), and his last, El Sicario (2012). Chuck was a frequent guest at our bookshop, beginning with the grand opening in 1997 where he traveled here to insult my audience by delivering a speech entitled Book Collecting: The Last Refuge of the Illiterate. His final appearance was a double-header in 2011, for the publication of Murder City: Ciudad Juarez and the Global Economy’s New Killing Fields (2011) and Dreamland: The Way Out of Juarez (2011). Chuck has appeared here many times, along with his partner Molly Molloy, Juarez photographer Julian Cardona, and El Pastor (Jose Antonio Galvan), among others.

“Friends Scott Carrier, Alex Caldiero, Trent Harris, and others to be announced will either be reading short Bowden passages or sharing their own memories of Chuck with us. We will gather to pay our respects to this remarkable human being who brought so much into our lives.

“I learned over thirty years ago, that when Chuck Bowden told me about a person, a place, a song, a book, or anything; there was a very good reason...I should pay attention. If Chuck ever shared an author or a book or a special place with you; please come share your story with us.”
